Partly intentionally and partly by serendipity, the young wizard managed to shape them into something new and fantasic: the chronomagicks, the finely tuned shaping of arcane energy into the ability to rewrite time. Unfortunately for Rintarou, the world chose to fight against him. More and more powerful groups began to chase the egotistical young wizard for his abilities, and despite his constant alterations of the world and its timelines he was finally backed into a corner. In one his "parallel worldlines," dystopia threatened the world - and his beloved childhood friend, Mayuri Shiina, died. In another, the young woman he had come to love, Kurisu Makise, died - and the world erupted into nuclear war.
Unable to accept a world where he had to sacrifice one of his beloved companions, Rintarou Okabe took the third option: leaping back in time two days at a time, searching for some way to break the dreaded attractor field's convergence. He leapt over and over, poring over every tome and message board in search of any possible alternative, and after many iterations he finally found it in the eldritch rituals of lichdom. The single sacrifice of his own flesh, the binding of his soul to a broken pocket watch - a small price to pay for the ability to wait as long as necessary, to watch from the shadows and influence whatever he could.
Within the day, the deed was done, and with the most powerful time leap he could muster - one powered by the sacrifice of all his chronomagicks - he flew back to the creation of the Earth, sixty-five million years prior. From this "omega worldline," he waited powerlessly in the shadows and watched. Eras began and ended, and he watched. Humanity began to rise, developing tools and nations and religions, and he watched still. Unfortunately, the eons took their toll on his fragile psyche; the noble wizard Rintarou Okabe faded away entirely. In his place is the mad wizard, the paranoid lich whose eternal focus lies in places unknown... Kyouma Hououin.
But... beneath his threats of chaos, of overthrowing the ruling structure, of death and decay, there may still be a fragment of humanity. Some say that Rintarou Okabe still lurks within that skeletal husk of a man, that the soul which endured millions of years' abuse to save two dear friends still lives on. Who knows the truth? Only the skeleton in a lab coat can say for sure - and Kyouma Hououin does not divulge his secrets so easily.
